The word "plastic" derives from the Greek plastikos meaning to mold or to shape. Plastic surgery is one of the oldest forms of surgery practiced having its roots in ancient India as early as 2000 Bc.

In December 1957 at Nagpur, Sir Harold Gillies inaugurated the Association of Plastic Surgeons in India - as a section of A.S.I.
